Dating to circa 1880, this French Victorian ring is crafted in 18KT gold as two intertwined snakes, each crowned with an oval ruby cabochon, totaling approximately 1 carat. Serpents have appeared in jewelry for thousands of years and carried associations that included eternity, renewal, protection, and wisdom. In 19th-century Britain, the motif gained particular romantic significance after Prince Albert presented Queen Victoria with a serpent engagement ring in 1839.
